OMCristine asked:
I can sing either mezzo and soprano, but I prefer soprano. Any suggestions? It HAS to be an art song, not too popular, not a spiritual, and not from any kind of opera, operetta, musical, etc.
Do NOT bother answering if you are just going to be presumptuous, unhelpful, and rude.
No, I am not arrogant and delusional. I know the talent I have and I know what I can work with. I made it clear in my application essay what I was capable of, as well as my MANY weaknesses. The college I’m applying to doesn’t require any prior vocal training, which is very helpful to me because of all the extenuating circumstances I’ve had to go through in my life.
I am not in way over my head, I know that I am up against hundreds of kids, both with and without prior training, and I am FULLY aware that there is a big chance I won’t get accepted. However, the school does say so on the site that they are looking for raw talent that has potential, and believe me, that is one thing I have in my favor. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have applied. I asked for songs that AREN’T arias is because I already know more than enough, but they require an aria AND an art song. So next time, instead of assuming, FIND OUT.
Oh, and for those of you who actually did help, thank you.

There’s a beautiful french song I sang for solo-fest once called The Cradle- Les Berceaux by René-François Sully-Prudhomme
It’s dynamic in range and mood. Absolutely beautiful if you are comfortable with the language.

I cannot believe that you are auditioning for an OPERA program (is this for real, or just an inflated name?) and you do not already HAVE a repertoire of arts songs in at least three or fours languages. Where is your PRIVATE TEACHER in all this? Because if this is The Real Deal, and you have to ask HERE – then you in in WAY over you head. There is no way we can help you at a distance, and in less than one week, and have you be a successful candidate. These forums are FULL of delusional people who have been watching WAY too many *reality shows* -and actually think that it IS reality. And an opera program that does not WANT any operatic selections? Hmmm . .
Added — You are applying to a *program* that doe not require any previous vocal training? Does not sound like it is of good quality. Your original question made it sound like this was the Real Deal – and now you back-step and tell us the level of what you are trying for, as well as explaining OMISSIONS in your original question – like that part about *no arias*. “Looking for raw talent” is pretty vague – and sounds shady to me. But what do I know? I have only only this professionally since 1971 – every single day. I have NEVER worked one day in any other field – so if you want an expert opinion, mine is but ONE you could get here. If you just want affirmation, that this sounds FABULOUS, and is a GREAT opera program – then I cannot possibly agree. Good luck – you are going to need plenty, because by your own admission, you have NO training. If this is what I THINK it is – they are going to accept you, and then ask for LOTS of money – a common scam. I know PLENTY of those . . . .
